Percy was born George Thomas Percy Youd in Helsby in 1880, but usually went by the name of Percy. At the time of the 1911 census, he lived at the Imperial in Prescot, where he was the 'Hotel Keeper'. Also there were his wife Sarah and children Gerald (9), Winifred (6), Percy (3) and Sydney (1).
Percy was one of the six Youd brothers who served, the other five being Frederick, Thomas, Carl, Horace and Samuel
He had moved to Prescot from Helsby and worked as a Foreman Machinist at the Wire Works, but the Company asked him to take over the licence of the Imperial, which he did, turning it into a very popular sporting venue.
The picture of him in the Reporter stated that he served with the South Lancashire Regiment. However service records have survived which show that he transferred as Private 52688 to the Royal Defence Corps on 22nd July 1916. He was 35 years old when he enlisted on 5th November 1914 and was discharged to the Reserve on 5th April 1917 and finally discharged on 6th January 1919.
He had not served overseas and had no medal entitlement.
After his death, Percy's amazing life story was published - "Tales From A Sporting Life" - based on his written notes.
