39, Bretherton Road, Prescot Private 40595, 3rd Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Born in Prescot on 16th August 1898, Thomas was the son of Edward Basnett. He was single, 19 years old and working as a Furnace Man at the Wire Works when he attested for military service on 11th December 1915 at Prescot.
He was initially posted to the Army Reserve and was finally mobilised on 21st March 1917, being posted to the 3rd Bn of the South Lancashire Regiment. He went to France with his unit on 28th June 1917 and a few weeks later was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as Private 29620.
He was wounded in action in December 1917, suffering a Gun Shot Wound to the neck.
He returned to the UK for treatment and did not go overseas again. Thomas was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Although he was demobilised on 31st March 1920, he enlisted again to the Territorials, joining the Royal Corps of Signals on 12th January 1922 as Signalman number 2557772 and serving for four years.
