Service DetailsPte Davies was almost certainly a conscript and went to France on 5th April 1918
In early November 1918, as the war reached its end, the British Army were moving rapidly against the retreating German forces, but still encountered stiff resistance and incurred casualties daily.
The War Diary for the 1st Battalion o 5th November tells us that they left JENLAIN at 6:30 a.m. and were to pass through 73rd brigade on high ground east of WARGNIES LE GRAND and continue the advance.
"The enemy was not encountered until forward company reached high ground about 1000 yards west of RIVER HOGNEAU. The advance was about 5000 yards.
A barrage was put down on enemy Machine Guns to assist the advance but without success and the Battalion held this position for the night. B & C Coys front line, A & D Coys in support. Enemy shelling was very scattered throughout the day. About 10 prisoners were taken.
Casualties; 1 officer and 5 other ranks killed, 12 other ranks wounded, 4 gassed".
Four of the men were buried at Cross Roads Cemetery but Pte Davies body was never identified and he is remembered on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial
