1901 Census -
John Stead, aged 29, a Horticulturalist, lived with his wife Emma Sylvia Stead (26) and their children John (3) and Victor Tyrell (1) at The Nursery in Burrows Lane, Eccleston.
1911 Census -
The Stead family were at Eccleston Nursery, Eccleston. John (39, a Nurseyeryman) and his wife Emma Sylvia 36) were shown as being married for 14 years in which they had two children. John (13) and Victor Tyrell Stead (11) are both listed as being at School.
With the family as a Boarder was Edward Bonamy Dobree, MA, who was the Vicar at Prescot Parish Church.
The family also had a servant, Jane Denton, aged 19.

Service DetailsJohn Stead attended Prescot Grammar School from 1906 to 1913.
His Medal Index Card, shown below, records his initial service as Private 4567 with the 5th Battalion, then his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the same unit. The card also reports that no trace of his overseas service could be found.
The Parish Magazine of 27th November reported the death as follows. 'Second Lt. John Stead of 5th South Lancs., died of pneumonia in the camp at Oswestry a few days after receiving his commission. He was only 19 years old and for 8 years had been a member of our Grammar School. November 1916'.
It seems, therefore, that John Stead never actually saw overseas service.

His service is commemorated on the Grammar School Roll of Honour
His gravestone in Christ Church, Eccleston states "In Loving Memory of John Stead, 2nd Lieut., Sth Lancs Regt, beloved eldest son of John and Sylvia Stead, of this parish, born 22nd April 1897, died in the Military Hospital, Oswestry, 15th November 1916"
John Stead's death was announced in the Liverpool Echo on 20th November 1916
