Aged 12, Thomas is living with his parents Thomas (47, a coal miner) and Catherine (5) at 9, Derby Square, Prescot. Also there are Thomas' brothers George (23), Edward (21), James (15) and sisters Margaret (19) and Katie (8).

Service DetailsThomas Roughley born was born on 25th February 1889 in Prescot, sixth of seven children of Thomas and Catherine Roughley. He married Jessie Case of Sewell St Prescot in the summer of 1914, before which he lived at 30 Grosvenor Road, Prescot. Thomas and Jessie had one child May Roughley born Dec 8th 1914.
Thomas was listed at 30 Grosvenor Road in the 1914 Electoral Roll of Prescot (below)
He enlisted on 26th February 1917 at Ormskirk where he worked as a gas engineer. Initially serving with the 4th Battalion of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment, he also served with the 2nd and 6th Battalions of the Royal Irish Regiment.
Thomas went to France in July 1917 with the King's, apparently going straight into the Ypres Salient as the Third Battle of Ypres was about to start. Within three weeks he had been wounded, the Prescot Reporter stating that he was in hospital in Leicestershire.
He returned to France on Christmas Day 1917. The 6th RIR was disbanded at Saulcourt on Feb 9th 1918 and merged with 2nd and 7th RIR, Thomas being assigned to the 2nd Battalion.
He was mortally wounded and died 16th March 1918. The following report was in the local newspaper and also the commemoration from his family.

Thomas was buried at Tincourt Cemetery near Peronne, France. His headstone is shown below.
The Parish Magazine of 25th March 1918 added 6 names to the existing 100 who had already fallen, including 'Pte. Thomas Roughley, 28, 2nd Royal Irish regiment. Killed in France, 16th March 1918, of Sewell Street. Leaves a widow and one child'.
As he was serving in an Irish regiment, Thomas was also commemorated in the Irish Memorial records as shown below.
