Service DetailsOn 29th April 1918, the Battalion were in the front line at MILLEKRUISSE. The War Diary reads, "At 3 a.m. the Hun opened up with everything he had until 7.45 am when he attacked in mass formation. The brunt fell on "D" Company who went out to meet him. Our barrage, Lewis Guns and MG fire broke up the attack which was over by 8.10 am. The men were magnificent the 2 support Coys moved up to reinforce front line, 2 companies from 4th D. of W. taking their place in support. Our line is intact, but our casualties are heavy, I am afraid. No movement by day is possible, runners being the only people who get about. I must say they were heroes, going through the heaviest barrage all day long. The Hun shelled practically all day. Approx 100 Other Ranks killed or wounded"
Amongst those was Private Roberts. Like so many of his colleagues, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
Private Roberts next of kin is listed within the "Register of Soldiers Effects" as his father, William.
