1891 census -
4 year old Thomas lived at 13, Highfield Place, Prescot. He was the eldest child of Michael, a 29 year old Coal Miner, and Ann (25). Also present were Frank (3) and 1 year old Rose.
1901 Census -
Thomas was aged 14 and lived at 13, Highfield Place, Prescot, with his widowed mother Ann, a 37 year old charwoman, and siblings Frank (12), Rose (10), John (8) and Annie (5).
1911 Census -
Thomas Mother, Ann, had by this time remarried to Henry Mercer, a Collier. The family lived at 5 Highfield Place and Thomas was recorded as Single, 25 years old and working as a Collier. |

Service DetailsThomas attested to the 1/5th Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment on 5th September 1914. Although he appears to have remained with the regiment until at least 1917, he did not go overseas with them in February of 1915 when the battalion went to France.
Records show that he was renumbered with the South Lancs in February of 1917 to number 240959, but around the same time he appears to have been transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.
He was disembodied from the Territorial Force on 14th January 1919 but appears to have been suffering from illness or injury incurred whilst serving, and ultimately he died at Knotty Ash Hospital on 8th July 1921.
Thomas Hefferon's Medal Index Card names him as 'John', and it appears that this was the name he used while serving in the army. It lists his entitlement to the British War Medal and Victory Medal and also records his previous service with the South Lancashire Regiment
Thomas Hefferon's CWGC headstone in Prescot Churchyard. The stone includes the inscription 'Also commemorates Francis Hefferon, beloved husband of Nancy, died Jan 14 1927 aged 37 years'. This refers to Thomas Hefferon's younger brother.
