Service DetailsJames Harding was the youngest son of James McGill Harding and his wife Anne (nee Pulford), of Wigtown, Scotland. There were 6 elder children. His father died in 1888 and in 1894 his mother married John Tonge, also of Wigtown. Sadly, John appears to have died in 1897.
At some unknown date, it appears that the family moved to Prescot, and James was recorded in the 1914 Electoral Roll (below), living in Houghton Street
The Parish Magazine of 29th October 1918 reported 'The following names to be added to the Roll of Honour' and included 'Rifleman James Harding, Houghton Street, Killed in action 27th September'.
No details of James' service are known, but the following item appeared in the Dumfries Standard of 26th October 1918, suggesting that Anne Tonge had perhaps contacted the press back home in Scotland to advise them of her son's death.
He was killed in the fighting which resulted in the capture of the village of Sauchy-Cauchy, one of 19 men who fell in that action and are today buried in the military cemetery in the town
