Robert Hamilton enlisted at St Helens on 4th September 1914

The 11th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers was formed shortly after the outbreak of war at Wrexham, and it would appear that Robert Hamilton joined it in its infancy. He sailed for France with the Battalion in early September 1915, initially being based north of Amiens.

However in late October, they received orders to move to Macedonia. They travelled to the south of France and sailed from Marseille on 27th October onwards. They arrived in Salonika between the 5th and 10th November 1915, and remained there until the end of the war.

The campaign had many long periods of inactivity, with most casualties being the result of illness. In July 1918, a general offensive was planned for September. This began on 14th September, and in the action the 11th Battalion suffered heavily, with just 3 officers and 100 Other Ranks unwounded.

It seems likely that Pte Hamilton was wounded as part of this offensive, and he died from his wounds on 23rd September 1918
