54 Scotchbarn Lane, Prescot Private 83581, Rifle briogade Ralph was born on 11th December 1867 in Rainhill. He was a brother of Alfred James Sherwood. On 3rd March 1889 he married Phoebe Chesworth in Parr, and the 1891 census records them at Warrington Road, Prescot.
Phoebe died, aged 25, in February 1897 and in the 1901 census, widower Ralph is living at 48 Houghton Street, with an occupation of Watch Case Maker. By 1911, he had moved to 54 Scotchbarn Lane and was working as a Labourer at the Wire Works.
On 22nd January 1915 he attested as Private 845 to the National Reserve, aged 48.
He was listed in the Prescot Reporter in May 1915 as one of the local men serving with the colours
Late in 1915 he was posted to the 19th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade as Private 83581 and with them he went to India on 11th January 1916, transferring to the 23rd Battalion on 1st August 1916. He remained in India until returning to the UK on 10th June 1917, being posted to the Royal Defence Corps in Edinburgh.

He was demobilised on 6th April 1919, giving his address at that time as Enfield Road, Old Swan. He was entitled to the British War Medal.
Ralph died late in 1938 in Prescot, aged 70
