14, Atherton Street, Prescot Private 1754, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment William Thomas Box was born on 13th November 1891 in Prescot, the eldest son of John and Sarah Box. The 1911 census reported that William, still living with his parents, worked at a Glass Bottle Factory as a Labourer.
He joined the Territorial Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment in early 1913 and was mobilised immediately on the outbreak of war in August 1914, and went to France with them on 13th February 1915.
He was included in the Prescot Reporter list of men serving the Colours, in 1915.
William was promoted to Sergeant and then in February 1917 he was renumbered to Private 240224 as part of the Territorial Force renumbering.
He remained with the unit throughout the war until he was disembodied on 25th February 1919. His service entitled him to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
In the Spring of 1920, he married Mary Preston at St Mary's Church, Prescot. They went on to have 5 children and in the 1939 National Register, were living at 107, Shaw Lane, Prescot, with William recording his occupation as a Machine Assistant at the Wire Works.
William died in June 1969, aged 62
