7, Lancaster Terrace, Prescot Private 4660, 10th (Scottish) Battalion, King’s (Liverpool) Regiment Ernest was the brother of John Whitfield Stott

Ernest attested for military service on 31st May 1915, aged 24. He sailed for France on 18th Battalion were in trenches east of Epehy. At 7:00 a.m. a heavy enemy artillery barrage commenced, followed at 8:00 by a strong attack. The right front sector held up the attack, apart from a short stretch on the extreme right where the enemy penetrated the lines. Two platoons counter attacked and a stand was made, but due to an outflanking movement, they withdrew and established themselves along a ridge.
Part of the garrison in one area were completely cut off and nothing was heard from them.
When the roll call was taken, no less than 435 men were reported as missing, amongst them Private Mercer.
He was identified as a Prisoner in Munster on 5th January 1918 and was only repatriated to the UK after the Armistice. Demobilised in early 1919, he was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
He was listed in the 1939 National Register (below) at 4 St James Road, Prescot, with his wife Elsie. He was recorded as a Plumber & Decorator.
