3 Derby Square, Prescot Private 262605, Royal Air Force Born in Prescot on 18th March 1872, William was the eldest son of Thomas and Alice Sherratt. Though living in Prescot in his early years, by the time of the 1911 census he was living with his widowed mother, Alice (68) in Wednesbury, Warwickshire. His elder sister, Catherine, had also been born in Prescot, as had his mother. William worked as a Boot Repairer.
After initial training, he was posted to the Dover Station on anti-submarine duties. He joined the Royal Air Force on 26th June 1918 when he was already 46 years old. In October of that year, he was married to Eliza Price at King's Norton, Worcestershire
After the war, he was moved to clerical duties at Chiseldon prior to discharge.
He was discharged on 30th April 1920 and was entitled to the British War Medal
At the time of the 1939 National Register, William lived at 6, York Street, Birmingham. He was widowed and still worked as a Boot Repairer.
William died in Birmingham in June 1952, aged 80
