1, Williams Street, Prescot Corporal 3767, Royal Air Force Frederick was born in Prescot on 3rd September 1892. He was the third of five sons of William and Mary Stephens, who also had 4 daughters! By 1911, the family had moved to Leigh, where Frederick (listed as bring 20 years old) was employed as a Painter's Labourer.
On 22nd February 1915, he joined the Royal Flying Corps as a Private and by November 1916 he was Flight Sergeant. He went to France on 23rd July 1915. He appears to have been based at the School of Aerial Gunnery, though the dates are not clear. He also served at Henley, Eastchuch and RAF Swingate.
Returning to the UK on 15th April 1916, he married Minnie Matthews in Leigh on 12th May before returning to France where he remained until 22nd November 1917.
On 1st April 1918, he transferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force and on 20th May 1919 he returned to France, this time remaining there until January 1920.
He transferred to the RAF Reserve on 12th March 1920 but was recalled to service on 11th April 1921, before final discharge on 21st February 1923.
Frederick was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal
