10, Maryville Road, Prescot Private 4350, 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Born in Whiston around 31st July 1887, William was the son of Robert & Elizabeth Young. Robert was a Labourer and native of Scotland, with the family living at Ropers Bridge.
In the 1911 census, William is listed, aged 23, as a Labourer in the Rolling Mill at the Wire Works. At this time, the family lived at 25, William Street, Prescot. Shortly after this, in August of 1912, he married Catherine Pocknell at St Mary's Church, Prescot.
On 27th March 1913, their daughter Ena was born.
On 15th October 1915, William enlisted into the army. His address was given as 1, Evelyn Avenue, Prescot. After training, he sailed from Southampton on 16th June 1916, arriving at Rouen the following day.
On 21st September 1917, he suffered a Gun Shot Wound to the left shoulder which resulted in him being admitted to No 3 Canadian General Hospital at Bolougne. After recuperation, he returned to his unit.
On 6th October 1917, he was again wounded, this time in the chest and as a result of this wound, he went to the Rest Camp at Marlboro.
Records from 1919 show him serving with the 1/5th Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment, as Sergeant 241821 and living at 10, Maryville Road, Prescot. Later on that same year, he and Catherine had a son, Robert.
It isn't clear when he was discharged, but he was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory medal
In 1921, William once again joined the army, serving as Sergeant 2557505. He was eventually discharged on 27th August 1930, recording his address on discharge as 10 Maryville Road, Prescot
He still lived at that address with wife Catherine and daughter Ena at the time of the 1939 National Register, shown below
