2, King Street, Prescot Private 4555, 2/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Charles signed up for military service at St Helens on 8th December 1915 and was subsequently called up on 22nd January 1916. He was 19 years old, single and worked at the Wire Works 'covering telephone cables'. His next of kin was his mother, Sarah, who lived in Toxteth.
He remained in the UK until 17th February 1917, when he went to France with his unit, In March 1917, Charles was renumbered to 241958. He was also transferred to the 2/4th Battalion of the Regiment.
He returned to the UK on 1st September 1918 and was discharged to the Class Z Reserve on 26th September 1919. He gave his mother's address as his intended place of residence, though he eventually ended up back in Prescot.
Charles died in Prescot in June 1973, aged 75.
Charles was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal
