7, Queens Road, Prescot Pte S/307344, Army Service Corps At the time of the 1911 census, Fred was a 13 year old schoolboy living with parents Frederick and Clara at the above address. Frederick was a Watch Wheel Cutter.
Fred was called up for military service on 5th September 1916 and was immediately posted to the Army Reserve. He was then called up to serve as a Clerk in the Army Service Corps on 5th Match 1917. Aged 18, he recorded that he worked as a Clerk in civilian life.
Initially posted to Dublin, in March of 1918 he sailed from Southampton to France, where he travelled overland via Cherbourg and Taranto before arriving in Egypt on 3rd April 1918. Here he served in the Base Depot.
He suffered from Malaria in early 1919, serving at the time in Alexandria and Haifa where he remained for the rest of his service.
Fred was discharged on 15th March 1920. His service entitled him to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
