4 Chapel St, Prescot Corporal 150160, Royal Garrison Artillery Walter Atkinson was born on 4th April 1897.
In 1911, the Atkinson family lived at 4, Chapel Street, Prescot. Head of household James, 41, was a Fish & Fruit Dealer. There were 6 children, Walter (13) being the second.
At the age of 18, and working as a Clerk, Walter attested in Prescot on 10th December 1915. His mother, Anne, was his next of kin, so presumably James had died since the 1911 census was taken. He was immediately posted to the Army Reserve and was called up for service on March 21st 1917 at Gosport, joining the Royal Garrison Artillery.
He was classed as 'Very Good' at Plotting and Observing.
He went to France in September 1917.
In May 1918, Walter was wounded. He suffered Wounds to the right leg and shoulder, and was admitted to the Australian General Hospital in Boulogne. After being treated in France, he was moved to an Auxiliary Hospital at Shifnal in Shropshire.
Walter was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. He was transferred to the Class Z Army Reserve on 3rd February 1919.
In the 1939 National register, shown below, Walter was living at 6, Central Avenue, Eccleston Park and working as an Estimating Clerk at the Wire Works
