4 Eccleston Street, Prescot Private 29458, 8th Bn., King’s Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment When the 1911 census was taken, the Syder family lived at Mill Lane Cottages, Knowsley. Head of household Edward, aged 54, worked as a Waggoner on a Farm. He and his wife Evelyn had 7 chuildren, including 11 year old George.
George was aged 18 when he enlisted into the army on 21st February 1918. He listed his mother, Mrs Evelyn Syder, as his next of kin. He was initially posted to the 53rd Training Battalion of the King's. but was transferred to the 8th Bn., King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment on 25th August, when he was posted to France.
He was wounded in October 1918, receiving a Gun Shot Wound to the Left Arm and returned to the UK on 13th October for treatment. He had his arm amputated and also lost his right eye.
He did not go back overseas. On 12th May 1919, he was fitted with an artificial arm at Blackpool.
George was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. He was discharged on 20th August 1919, and was additionally entitled to the Silver War Badge.
Though his address on discharge was 71, Kemble Street, Prescot, after demobilisation he lived at 6, Squire's Place, Prescot.
He died in late 1975 in Prescot.
