Thomas enlisted on 29th May 1915 at St Helens and was included in the Prescot Reporter list of men serving with the colours in May 1915. He worked as a Labourer at the United Alkali Plant in Widnes. He married Gertrude ? in Prescot on 2nd August 1915 and they had two children; Marian (7th January 1916) and Thomas Walter (21st October 1918).
On joining the army, it seems that Thomas had a problem with his right foot, and actually agreed to have a toe amputated if necessary.
Although it isn't clear if this happened, Thomas did become entitled to the Silver War Badge, as his military service appears to have aggravated his disability.
He was demobilised on 4th January 1919, at which time he gave his address as Eccleston Lane Ends, Prescot. He was 30 years old at the time. Having not seen overseas service, Thomas did not have a medal entitlement.
On 11th October 1927, Thomas wrote to the Army Records Office asking for a 'Character Reference as he had not been provided with one and employers were asking for this when he applied for work.
