13, Ward Street, Prescot Gunner 142311, Royal Field Artillery Born in Prescot on 1st September 1890, John Atkinson was the son of George and Alice Atkinson.
The 1911 census recorded George as a Journey man Joiner, with John being a Grocer's Shop Assistant. He was the eldest of 8 children living with their parents at the above address. George and Alice had 11 children, 2 of whom were recorded as having died.
25 year old John Atkinson, a Shop Assistant, attested for military service in Prescot on 7th December 1915. He was unmarried, and gave his father, George, as next of kin. He was immediately posted to the army reserve and was then mobilised on 2nd May 1916.
He went to France with his unit, 'D' Battery, 169 Brigade, on 13th December 1916.
In August 1918, he was appointed to the rank of Acting (Paid) Lance Sergeant. Then in October 1918 he was granted 14 days leave to the UK. He was admitted to hospital on 9th November 1918 suffering from flu, remaining there until 22nd November.
He returned from France on 18th May 1919 and was discharged on 20th June 1919.
John was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these in 1921.
