Eccleston Park, Prescot L/Cpl 280, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Robert Beesley, a 30 year old Machinist at the BI Factory in Prescot, joined the Territorial Battalion of the South Lancs Regiment at Prescot in April 1908. In March 1914, he extended his period of service for a further 6 years.
He was married to Rose and they had children Annie, Lily and William.
He sailed for France with his Battalion on 5th August 1914, the day after the outbreak of war, and remained there until 6th April 1916 when he returned to the UK. In May of 1915, he had been promoted to Lance Corporal.
Robert was finally discharged on 7th April 1916 having completed his service engagement. He was entitled to the 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal
