16 Halsall Street, Prescot Private 4961, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment On 23rd March 1916 in St Helens, 32 year old Joseph joined up for the Duration of the War. He recorded that he was employed as a Labourer and unmarried. His brother Alexander, of 49, Albany Road, Prescot, was listed as his next of kin.
Joseph was posted to Class W, which meant that he remained in the army but was posted for war work, in his case to an Iron Foundry in Sutton Oak, St Helens.
Joseph was demobilised on 17th May 1919. He died in Prescot in 1945, aged 61
