49, Warrington Road, Prescot Gunner 162072, Royal Field Artillery Born in Prescot in 1892, 23 year old John R Baker was single and working as a Clerk when he attested for military service at Preston on 10th December 1915. His mother, Alice, of the same address was his next of kin. He was only mobilised on 18th October 1916, when he was posted to No 2 Field Depot of the Royal Artillery.
He was transferred to the Yorks and Lancaster Regiment as Private 40539 in January 1917 and went to France shortly afterwards. Becoming a Lance Corporal in October 1917, he was promoted to Corporal in October 1918 and then to the position of Sergeant on 26th January 1919.
He was reported as being wounded and gassed on 12th April 1918
John left Dieppe for England on 6th February 1919 and was demobbed in March, at which time his address was listed as Poplar Bank, Old Lane, Prescot.
Sadly, John died in Prescot early in 1926, aged 33.
