40, Aspinall Street, Prescot Gunner 97523, RGA 30 Year Old James Battersby worked as a Carter and Contractor when he attested to the army on 17th February 1916. He gave his sister, Alice, of the same address as his next of kin.
He was immediately posted to the reserve and then mobilised on 3rd June 1916 , being posted to 179 Heavy Battery, RGA, on 24th June.
On 23rd January 1917, James, along with his unit, was sent to Salonika.
James was finally discharged suffering from Bronchitis on 11th June 1919. He was awarded a small pension as his illness was attributed to his military service.
James was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. In addition, he was awarded the Silver War Badge.
