William ATHERTON

67, Houghton Street, Prescot

Pte 2900, 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment

Born in Whiston in 1878, William Atherton married Esther Welsby in 1899. They had two daughters, Ellen (b. 1900) and Evelyn (b. 1901). The 1911 census reported that William worked as a Foreman Joiner for a Building Contractor.

William was a pre-War Territorial, recording that he had served for 11 years with the Territorials when he was embodied for full time service in Prescot on 22nd September 1914. He was aged 34.

Unfortunately, like many of the older Territorials, William was found unfit for military service and was therefore discharged on 9th November 1914. He did not see any overseas service.
