30, Houghton Street, Prescot Private 20114, 2/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment On 5th November 1914 in St Helens, William Stott attested to the Territorial Army. He noted his next of kin as his wife, Mary Jane Stott, of the same address, and his trade as 'Shopkeeper'. He was 40 years old and had previously served with the 2nd Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment.
William was initially assigned to the National Reserve, but was then assigned as Private 20114 to the 1st Supernumerary Company of the 2/5th Bn. South Lancs. Regiment.
He remained in the UK with the South Lancs until April 1916, when he was transferred to the Royal Defence Corps with a new number of 25573. He was discharged from this unit and the army on 28th September 1917 as he was no longer physically fit enough to serve. He had been suffering from shortage of breath, disordered action of the heart and rheumatic pains, but his discharge medical examination noted that these were not the result of his military service.
The above image of the rolls of the Silver War Badge show William's entry, which records that he enlisted on 5th November 1914 and was discharged on 17th October 1917, aged 43, due to sickness.
His address at this time was given as 30, Eaton Street, Prescot.
