13, High Street, Prescot Private TR3/25510, South Lancashire Regiment John Burke was born on 11th November 1880.
Although it's not clear when John came to Prescot, he was not on the 1901 census but was married in Prescot in 1904. The 1911 census showed him as a 32 year old Forester's Labourer living at 17, High Street, Prescot with his wife Catherine and three children, in addition to three boarders. John was a native of Newcastle, Co Mayo.
He attested for military service on 8th December 1915 in Prescot, but was not called up for service until 14th June 1916. In the meantime he was posted to the Training Battalion of the South Lancs. His attestation papers reported that he was 37 years old and a Lodging House Keeper.
His next of kin was his wife Catherine (nee Kelly), who he had married on 14th June 1904. They had six children; Delia (31/08/1904), Francis (05/05/1908), John (21/03/1910), Peter (07/08/1911), Catherine (06/10/12) and Winifred 01/04/1916).
When he was mobilised on 14th June, he was posted to the 13th Battalion of the South Lancs., officially becoming a private in the Battalion on 15th June 1916. On 31st August 1916 he was transferred to 60th Training Battalion and then on 9th September 1916, he was discharged as he was not considered to be fit for military service.
In the 1939 National Register, shown below, John was living at 36 Dragon Lane, Whiston
