William STRETTLE

43 Houghton Street, Prescot

Private 21993, 11th Bn, South Lancashire Regiment

One of four brothers who served and returned:- James, Joseph, Samuel and William Strettle.

William attested to the army on 21st August 1915, stating that he was 19 years and 7 months old and worked as a Haulage Hand. He was single and gave his next of kin as his father, James, at the same address. He was initially assigned to the 11th Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment, then posted to the 13th Battalion on 22nd September 1915, but on 19th November that year he was discharged as it had been found that he was actually under 17 years of age. It has been noted that he was shown to be 2 years old at the time of the 1901 census and 12 at the time of the 1911 census, so would have been just under 16 when he enlisted.
