At the time of the 1911 census, Joseph was serving as a Private with the South Lancashire Regiment and was based at Napier Bar, Lahore, India
Enlisting to the 5th Bn of the South Lancashire Regiment on 24th February 1909, Joseph recorded that he was 18 years old, a Labourer with British Insulated & Helsby Cables. He listed his father, James, as his next of kin at the same address. He was discharged from the army 29 days later as a consequence of joining the regular army, this being the 1st Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment.
He was listed in the Prescot Reporter list of men with the colours in May 1915, but no further details of his service have been found.
Joseph died in Prescot in 1963 at the age of 73.
