Anthony NULTY

Anthony Nulty was an elder brother of my grandfather Thomas Nulty, and also brother to Patrick and James Nulty. He was born on 6th January 1880 in Prescot.

In the 1891 census, the family are listed as Lodgers in 16, Browns Court, Prescot.

He is listed in the 1911 census as a 30 year old Coal Miner, married to Margaret and with children Thomas (5), Maggie (4) and Anthony (2)

Anthony is listed in the Prescot Reporter in May 1915 as one of the Prescot men serving in the forces.

His Medal Index Card shows that he first went overseas on 2nd June 1915, when he landed at Gallipoli with the 1st Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers. The initial landings of the Battalion at Gallipoli had taken place on 26th April.

They remained in Gallipoli until the evacuation of the peninsular on the night of 7th/8th January 1916, at which point they firstly sailed for Egypt and then on 25th February, they sailed to Marseilles in France, arriving there sometime in March 1916.

By 15th March, they had moved to the Somme sector and were based close to Pont Remy. They remained on the Western Front until the end of the war, fighting at Albert and Transloy in the Somme campiagn, then taking part in both the Arras offensive and the Passchendale fighting in 1917 and the advance through Flanders in 1918.

After the Armistice, they were selected to march into Germany, occupying the Rhine bridgehead, reaching Cologne on 9th December.

Anthony was discharged to the Class Z Reserve on 7th February 1919. He was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal
