North Court, High Street Private 3862, 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment John Edward Cofield was born in Prescot on 2nd May 1881. He was the elder brother of George Frederick Cofieldand James Earnest Cofield
In the 1901 Census, the Cofield family lived at 28 Warrington Road, Prescot and comprised father William a 45 year old Railway Signal man, mother Ellen (44), and children Joseph (22), John (19), George (14), Elizabeth (8), William (7) and James (5)
In 1909, John married Martha Jaundrill at St Mary's Church, Prescot
By the 1911 Census John, 29, lived at 19, Sewell Street, Prescot with wife Martha and daughter, Sarah, aged 1. John was working at the Wire Works.
In the 1914 Electoral Roll, the family had moved to North Court, High Street, as shown below.
John enlisted for military service on 22nd May 1915 as Private 3862, 1/5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment. He went to France with them after January 1916 and in February 1917 was renumbered to 241495.
He was discharged on 1st May 1918 and was entitled to the British War Medal, Victory Medal and Silver War Badge. By this time he was aged 36 and returned to Prescot.
The 1939 National Register listed the family at 9, Victoria Place, Prescot (see below)
John died in Prescot in March 1943 at the age of 62
