George Frederick COFIELD

28 Warrington Road, Prescot

Pte 13508, King's (Liverpool) Regiment.

George was born on 5th Fenruary 1887 in Prescot.

At the time of the 1901 Census, the Cofield family lived at 28 Warrington Road, Prescot and comprised father William a 45 year old Railway Signal man, mother Ellen (44), and children Joseph (22), John (19), George (14), Elizabeth (8), William (7) and James (5). George was employed as a GPO Telegraph Messenger

By 1911 George was a Boarder at 5 Back Bath Street, St Helens. Aged 24, he was a boarder with the Smith family and worked as a Coal Miner Drawer.

His army service number is from a range issued in August 1914. He landed in France on 31st May 1915, and I believe this places him with the 11th Battalion, a Pioneer unit. However he is not listed in a Nominal Roll of that 11th Bn which was taken at Ypres in November 1915, so it's not absolutely certain that he served with them.

Pte Cofield was listed in the Prescot Reporter on May 1915 as one of the local men serving with the colours.

He was demobilised, probably in early 1919 and was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal as shown on his Medal Index Card (below)

After the war, he married Beatrice Causer in 1920, but she died in 1925 after having three children; Doris, Bert and Ronald.

George remarried in 1930 to Ivy Gardner and they had four children; Rosemary, Dennis, Dorothy and Norman

In the 1939 National Register, shown below, the family are listed at 67, Aldred Road, Oxford.

George died in Oxford in 1966, aged 79

George's younger brother, James , was killed in 1918. Older brother John Edward Cofield also served
