On 10th December 1915, John Parkin attested for military service at Prescot, joining the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner. He was 19 years old, single and worked as a Machinist at the Wire Works. His mother, Beatrice, was his next of kin.
He was immediately assigned to the Army Reserve and was only mobilised for service on 12th March 1917.
John was posted to a unit in India on 25th September 1917 and appears to have remained there until leaving Bombay for the UK on 8th October 1918.
He was demobilised on 5th April 1920 and was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal
