31, Columbia Road, Prescot Private 1323, 5th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment Edward was the younger brother of Wilfred Hyde and son of William H Hyde
Edward was just 14 years old when he attested to the South Lancs Regiment in January 1910. He worked as a Labourer at the Wire Works. He attended the annual training camp each year until 1914, and was discharged having completed his four years service on 28th April 1914.
His attestation recorded his father William, mother Clara, brother Wilfred and sister Jessie, also noting that Edward had been born in Scotland.
It seems likely that Edward rejoined the army on the outbreak of war. The Prescot Reporter listed, in May 1915, that there was an Edward Hyde serving with the King's Own Scottish Borderers, but I am unable to find any firm evidence of this service. However, the Prescot Reporter announcement of his brother Wilfred's death stated that 'George Edward Hyde' was serving with the KOSB. Perhaps he was using the name 'George' by now?
The 1911 census had listed the family at the above address, comprising parents William H (42) and Clara (40), with children Jessie (19), Wilfred (18), Edward (15), Elizabeth (13), Clara (10) and Ethel (5).
