32 Houghton Street, Prescot Private 602861, 13th Bn., Canadian Expeditionary Force Robert was a brother of Samuel Lawrenson
On attesting for military service in Ontario on 7th August 1915. Robert stated that he had been born in Prescot on 27th November 1896. At the time of enlistment, he lived at 47, Beverley Street, Galt, Ontario, worked as a Labourer and stated that he was unmarried. He listed his mother, Mrs M Lawrenson, as his next of kin.
Baptism records at St Mary’s church shown his date of birth as 27th November 1898, the son of son. The 1901 census lists the family at 25 Houghton Street, Prescot, where James and Nancy lioced with 7 sons
Robert had previously served for a year in the Highland Light Infantry of Canada
He was originally posted to the 34th Bn. and sailed for the UK on 23rd October 1915. He later transferred to the 13th Bn. on his arrival in France on 6th July 1916
He reported as wounded on 15th August 1917 in fighting at Hill 70 and then on 28th August, Pte Lawrenson was admitted to No 4 General Hospital at Camiers, suffering from Gun Shot Wounds to the Arms, Legs and Buttocks. He was later transferred to hospital in the UK, and was still in hospital in Orpington, Kent, as late as March 1918. Shortly after this, on 6th June 1918, he was invalided home to Canada, sailing from Liverpool aboard Hospital Ship “Llandovery Castle”.
He remained in hospital in Canada until being finally discharged on 20th December 1918, with shrapnel being removed from his arm as late as 5th December. His military discharge, dated 17th December, reported that he had partial loss of function of his right leg.
