Service DetailsArthur was working as a 21 year old Cowman on the family farm when he joined the army on 11th December 1915 at Prescot. He was unmarried and gave his mother, Helen, as next of kin.
Originally posted to the Depot Battalion of the South Lancashire Regiment, he remained in the UK until 20th October 1916, when he left for France. On arrival, he was posted to the 7th Battalion.
He was killed in action just 30 days later. Extracts from the War Diary are shown below, illustrating typical fighting of this time. No details of casualties are recorded, but the Battalion lost 25 men that day, including Private Conning. The fortunes of war denied him a marked grave and he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, along with 19 others of his battalion who fell that day
The Register of Soldier's Effects (incorrectly showing his date of death as 8th November instead of 18th) lists Arthur's mother, Ellen, as next of kin
Arthur was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His mother received these medals in 1922.
