Service DetailsThomas Yates attested for military service on 23rd August 1915 at Liverpool. Aged 31, he gave his occupation as 'Steward' and lived at 9, Hope Street, Prescot. He was single and gave his mother, Elizabeth, as his next of kin.
He sailed from Southampton for France on 8th November 1915, arriving at Havre the following day, where he was posted to 96 Field Ambulance.
Ironically, he was admitted to his own Field Hospital in May 1917 suffering from Pyrexia and Myalgia. After this he was in and out of hospital several times up to January 1918.
His records show that he continued to serve with the RAMC until being discharged in January 1919
Thomas died on 1st July 1920 and was buried in St Mary's Churchyard. His cause of death has not been ascertained but it must have related to the illnesses which he picked up on active service as he is commemorated by CWGC.
Thomas Yates Medal Index Card shows that he arrived in France on 9th November 1915, entitling him to the 1914-1915 Star in addition to his British War Medal and Victory Medal.
