10 year old Isaac lived with his parents Isaac (a Coal Miner) and Catherine, both aged 28, at 9, Vista Lane, Haydock. He had two younger brothers, William (7) and Harry (3) and also sister Margaret (5).
1911 Census - the family now lived in Penny Lane, Haydock, where 20 year old Isaac recorded his occupation as Coal Miner Hewer. |

Service DetailsBy the time of the Great War, Pte Williams was a regular soldier with the Northamptonshire Regiment and went to France on 11th November 1914 as part of a reinforcement draft
On 21st December 1914, the Battalion left their rest positions at Hazebrouck and marched to Vielle Chapelle, arriving there at noon. After refitting they moved to Le Touret, where they were told that they would be attacking that evening at Rue L'Epinette, along with 21st Bn, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
The two battalions moved to the attack around 7:00 pm and by 10:00 pm they had taken the position in front of them. They had suffered heavy casualties, mainly from enemy shell fire, totalling 3 officers and 60 men killed or wounded.
Isaac Williams was one of those killed. His body was never identified and he is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.
The Register of Soldiers Effects lists Maggie as Isaac's next of kin, also referring to a "child"
