Service DetailsJames was born on 3rd July 1883, the son of John and Margaret Stevenson.
James Stevenson's entry in the 1914 Electoral Roll for Prescot (with the surname spelt incorrectly)
His next door neighbour, William Foster, was killed in action three days earlier
James Stevenson was originally numbered 5050 in the Territorial Battalion of the South Lancs, this number being issued around March 1916. He was renumbered to 242355 in the Territorial Force Renumbering of March 1917.
Pte Stevenson was included in the official wounded list issued on 4th September 1917
On the day on which Pte Stevenson died, the Battalion were out of the line. It appears likely that he was mortally wounded in the German attack of 9th April, which is reported in the Battalion War Diary as follows:-
9th April 1918
"At 4:15 a.m. a very heavy bombardment and at 5:30 a.m. the order BUSTLE rarived. A & C Coys under Major Pilkington, DCO, moved to an assembly position N.W. of GORRE and the remainder of the Battn took up positions on the LE PREOL N. locality.
Both parties had casualties when moving to the new positions, Shell fire all day. A & C Coys came under the command of 165 Bde and B & D Coys under the command of 164 Bde. A & C Coys moved up practically to LOISNE CENTAL which was occupied by 1 and a half oys of the 1/10 KLR. C Coy reinforced them and & Coy dug in in rear in support.
HQ for these Coys were at LOISNE CHATEAU. At 5:30 a.m. B Coy were ordered to reinforce 1/4th L.N.L. (the Left Bn), D Coy reinforced 4 K.O.R.L with 2 platoons in DEATH OR GLORY SAP & CHEYNE WALK. The other 2 platoons reinforced 1/4 L.N.L ."
As Pte Stevenson is buried in Etaples, it seems likly that having been wounded, he was evacuated down the casualty chain until he reached the base hospital at Etaples.
After the war was over, the Parish Magazine reported on 27th November 1918, 'The following names to be added to the list of honour' and included ''Pte. James Stevenson, 38, of 5th S. Lancs, died of wounds 14th March 1918 of 34, Houghton Street. He leaves an aged and infirm mother who was dependent upon him'. It is assumed that they had incorrect information which reported his death in March.
His mother, Margaret, died in Whiston Hospital in June 1920 and was buried at St Mary's. She was 75 years old.
