Service DetailsJames Mannion was born in 1899 in Whiston. He was one of 9 children of Thomas and Mary Mannion, seven of whom lived beyond childhood.
His age meant that he was almost certainly conscripted into the army, probably in late 1917.
Under the heading 'This month, deaths in action', the Parish Magazine of 24th September 1918 reported 'Pte. James Mannion, 19, 13th Welsh Regiment on 27th August, of 38 Mines Avenue'.
He is buried at Fienvillers British Cemetery, and this was used for burials of men who died at two nearby Casualty Clearing Stations, which confirms that James died of wounds received. Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate any details of the action in which he was wounded.
