Service DetailsArthur Johnson attested for military service at Seaforth, joining the King's (Liverpool) Regiment on 11th December 1915. At that time he lived at 17, Station Road, Prescot. He gave his wife, Catherine, as his next of kin. They had two children; William (1914) and Kathleen (1917)
He was immediately posted to the Army Reserve and then mobilised on 13th June 1916. He was appointed paid Lance Corporal on 6th September 1916 then in December he was transferred to the Border Regiment.
With this unit, he went to France on 22nd December 1916.
He was granted leave to the UK in June of 1917 (presumably after the birth of Kathleen) and the next record of him shows him on a casualty list, listed as Wounded, on 4th October 1917.
Then on 26th October, he was posted missing. The previous day, the Battalion had been located on the MENIN ROAD just south of YPRES. although some German patrols were seen, they were driven back and in general, the enemy remained quiet.
On the morning of the 26th, the Battalion was instructed to attack a German Line close to Gheluvelt Village. A creeping barrage started at 5:40 a.m. and the attack itself was due to commence at 6:30 a.m. The attack met with heavy resistance and mixed results, and the casualties for the day were recorded as 5 Officers, killed, 2 wounded and 1 missing, with 6 Other Ranks killed, 174 wounded and 126 missing. Among the latter was Arthur Johnson
His body was not recovered and he was eventually declared dead on 9th August 1918.
In June 1918, his widow, Catherine, was awarded a pension for her and their two children.
Catherine Johnson is listed as next of kin on the Register of Soldiers Effects
Arthur's service is commemorated on the Methodist Church Roll of Honour and the Grammar School Roll of Honour
