Service Details

In April 1918, the 1/10th Bn of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment occupied the front line just south of the LA BASSEE CANAL.

At 4:00 a.m. on the 9th April, a very heavy bombardment of both the front and back areas opened and about 4:45 a.m. the pre-arranged code ("BUSTLE", on receipt of which battle positions had to be occupied) was received and the Battalion moved to TUNING FORK locality. Heavy casualties were sustained en route owing to the heavy and accurate shelling of all roads and tracks with High Explosive and Gas shells.

Shelling continued heavily until 9:50 a.m. when the enemy attacked on a long front. On the immediate front of the Battalion, the attack was unsuccessful but on the left, the front occupied by the PORTUGESE was penetrated and it was necessary to form a defensive flank in this direction.

"Z" Company accordingly occupied LOISNE CENTRAL. The Battalion came under the orders of the BGC, 165 Infantry Brigade. The evening and night were comparatively quiet.

27 men of the Battalion were killed on 9th April, including Fred Bailey. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

Private Bailey is remembered on the BICC Memorial Plaque

Pte Bailey was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal
