Charles William Stephenson was born in Nottingham in 1886, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Stephenson. The family appear to have moved to Prescot in 1900 and at the time of the 1901 census, they are shown as living at 5, Market Place, Prescot, where the family printing operation was based. Charles is shown as a 15 year old Apprentice Stationer.

In 1911, Charles married Elsie Marlow of Illinois, the daughter of a former Prescot watchmaker who had migrated to the USA. They had two sons, Leslie and Victor.

The Army list of 1915 showed Charles serving as a Second Lieutenant with the 1/5th Bn of the South Lancashire Regiment with a seniority date of 19th October 1914. He was subsequently promoted to Captain in November 1915 and appears to have retained that rank throughout the remainder of the war. Charles was posted to France on 17th February 1917.

Charles was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, and he applied for these in October 1925.

He was also the author of 2 books - "The Motion of Flames in Closed Vessels" in 1931 and "The Master Method of Slam Bidding for Contract Bridge" in 1934

After the war, Charles was in charge of the local Special Constabulary and served as head of the Home Guard throughout the Second World War. He also served as chairman of the Prescot Branch of the Royal British Legion.

He had two sons Leslie, who became a director of the family firm, and Victor, who farmed in North Wales.

Charles died in Prescot in 1957 at the age of 70. At the time he was Managing Director of the family printing company, T. Stephenson and Sons, Ltd., which he had joined as a boy of 14 in 1900.
