Born around 1890/91, and brother of Herbert Mutch, Walter was living at Chester Street at the time of the 1911 census, and was employed as a House Painter.
His Medal Index Card shows that he arrived in France with the Battalion on 13th February 1915. The Reporter stated that in 1916 he was awarded the Military Medal, and this award appeared in the London Gazette of 27th October 1916. This date suggests that the award was associated with actions in the early days of the Somme campaign, though a citation has not been located.
He remained with the unit throughout the war, finally being discharged in March 1919.
Walter was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
He married Florence Smith in Prescot in 1920, and I believe that they went on to have eight children. Walter remained in Prescot until his death in 1972, aged 82.
