39 Moss Street, Prescot Sapper 7114 (later 428285), West Lancashire Division, Royal Engineers In 1904, Thomas married Teresa Fitzmaurice, sister of Revd. William Fitzmaurice, at Prescot. The 1911 census showed them living at 9, Ward Street, Prescot, the home of Thomas' parents John and Hannah. Thomas was working as a Collier at the time. He and his wife had two daughters, Veronica, aged 3, and Kathleen, 4 months. A son, John, followed in 1913.
Thomas attested for Military Service on 28th September 1914, a few weeks before his 33rd birthday, at St Helens and was posted to the Royal Engineers.
He was reported in the Prescot Reporter list of men who were serving in May 1915, and also the Prescot Weekly Times list of Catholic Men who were serving. He sailed for France on 23rd June 1915, remaining there until 4th November when he returned to the UK. Another spell in France followed between June and November 1916 and then he was back to the UK until January 1917. Thomas' final period in France ran from 29th January 1917 until 2nd March 1917, when he once again returned home.
In July 1918, Thomas was transferred to the Army Reserve for employment at Lea Green Colliery, but was then recalled to the colours on 21st November 1918, remaining in service until his demobilization on 19th January 1919.
Thomas was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. He died in Prescot in 1953, aged 74. Ref. No.:
