12 Moss Street, Prescot Gunner 172075, 13 Fire Command, Royal Garrison Artillery James was born on 26th December 1891 in Prescot, the eldest of seven sons and two daughters to William and Elizabeth (Betsy) Roscoe. William was a Collier. At the time of the 1911 census the family were recorded at 3 Saggersons Court, Prescot, with James aged 19 and working as an Assistant Glass Bottler Blower.
On 7th August 1915, James married Florence May Kemp at St Dunstan's in West Derby and their daughter, Florence, was born on 11th June 1916. By this time, James was living at 12 Moss Street, Prescot.
On 11th December 1915, James attested for military service at Prescot. By this time he was working as a "Tanker" at the Wire Works. He was immediately posted to the Army Reserve, and remained with them until he was called up on 7th August 1917, when he was posted to the artillery as Gunner 172075. He went to France with them on 12th November 1917, though he returned to the UK just a few weeks later on 13th December 1917
He was discharged as being no longer physically fit for War Service on 26th September 1918
James was entitled to the Silver War Badge, British War Medal and Victory Medal
At the time of the 1939 National Register (below), James was living at 20 Cyprus Street, Prescot, and worked as a Tank Attendant at the Cable Works. Wife and daughter, both Florence, were also at the address.
James died in Prescot in early 1980, aged 89
