71 Kemble Street, Prescot Pte 28653, 27th Bn., Manchester regiment Fred was born in Auckland, Co Durham, around 1887, the son of John & Mary Richardson. The 1891 census listed the family at Railway Cottage, North Bedburn, Auckland. They were still there in 1901, with 14 year old Fred being at school, but by the time of the 1911 census, he had left home and worked as a Porter in Hartlepool, where he lived as a Boarder.
He attested for military service in Manchester on 3rd September 1915 and at that time, he gave his address as 71 Kemble Street, Prescot. He was a single man and was posted to the Manchester Regiment. It isn't clear why he had moved to Prescot, nor how long he stayed in the town.
On 19th December 1915, he married Mary Ann Shaw at St Michael's Church, Flixton, giving an address in Flixton as his residence.
On 28th January 1916 he went to France with his unit.
On 20th July 1916, he was wounded, suffering a Gun Shot Wound to the Knee. He returned to the UK for treatment on 1st August 1916 and then in on 31st March 1917, presumably after recuperation, he was transferred to the Labour Corps as Private 32772.
With the Labour Corps, he returned to France, staying there until New Years Day 1919, when he came back to the UK. He was then demobilised on 31st January 1919.
Fred was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these in 1921. It would appear that around this time, Fred also made a disability claim based on his wounds but this was rejected. The address on the claim was 4 Holt Lane, Rainhill
