8 Victoria Place, Prescot Sapper 7945, 419 Field Company, Royal Engineers Stephen Houghton was born on 18th November 1894 in Rainhill, the son of James and Elizabeth Houghton. The family lived at 8 No 2 Court, Victoria Place, Prescot in the 1911. Stephen, aged 16, was a Gas Fitter's Apprentice.
He attested for military service at St Helens on 12th May 1915, joining the Royal Engineers. At the time, his occupation was listed as "Gas Fitter". Stephen was single and listed his mother as next of kin.
He remained in the UK until 23rd November 1915 when he embarked for France.
He was included in the Prescot Reporter list of May 1915 showing local men serving with the colours.
Stephen was slightly wounded in action on 9th August 1916 and again on 12th September, this time suffering from shell shock which resulted in him returning to the UK for treatment on 18th. He also had a Gun Shot Wound to the elbow.
The Liverpool Daily Post of 15th October 1916, below, listed him as suffering from Shell Shock.
He was again in the UK between 23rd and 27th April 1917. By this time, he had been renumbered to 426707
Stephen was demobilised on 19th August 1919, returning home to Victoria Place, Prescot. He was entitled to the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, receiving these in April 1921 and January 1922.
On 26th March 1921, he married Ellen Hornby at Prescot St Mary's Church
At the time of the 1939 National register, shown below, he lived at 1 Wood Lane, Prescot.
Stephen died in Prescot in 1960, aged 65
