1 Court, High Street, Prescot Private 45611, 10th Bn., Royal Welsh Fusiliers Martin Rooney was the younger brother of William Rooney and was born in Prescot in 1890, the son of James and Elizabeth Rooney.
By the time of the Great War, Martin was 24 years old and employed as a Labourer at the Wire Works.
On 6th December 1915, not long after the death of his brother, Martin attested for military service at Warrington. He was immediately posted to the Reserve but was called up on 9th February 1916, initially to the 12th Bn., South Lancashire Regiment but veru soon afterwards he was posted to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. With this unit, he went to France on 1st June 1916.
On 19th July 1916, he was admitted to 135 Field Ambulance, probably as a result of minor wounds, reporting back to duty on 29th July.
On 28th May 1917, he was transferred to 313th Road Construction Company, Royal Engineers. He was assigned the rank of Pioneer and a new number of WR22659
Martin was posted to Class Z Reserve on 8th March 1919. He was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
After the war, he returned to work in the Wire Works. He married Ellen Stevens in Prescot in the summer of 1922. At the time of the 1939 National Register, shown below, Martin and his family lived at 100, Kingsway, Prescot.
Martin died in Prescot in March 1953, aged 63
